Jury duty scam on the rise: Aiken County warns public

AIKEE, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - Scammers are taking efforts to a new level by using missed jury duty to get information and money from residents in Aiken County, officials warn.

The Aiken County Sheriff’s Office wants to alert the community of scammers that are telling people they have missed jury duty, have outstanding fines or warrants that need to be paid to avoid an arrest.

The sheriff’s office says scammers are even emailing or texting a fake warrant.

Potential victims should request all information from the person identifying as law enforcement.

What the sheriff’s office says you need to :

  • Unserved warrants will not be emailed or texted.
  • Law enforcement/government agencies will not you demanding immediate payment for outstanding fines/warrants.
  • Be cautious of giving out personal information over the phone.
  • Do not agree to any payment over the phone for a company/agency you are not familiar with.

If you have any outstanding fines, you should pay them to the Clerk of Court Office directly or by mail.
