S.C. police officer on leave over accident that killed beachgoer

HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WMBF) - A police officer is on istrative leave after fatally running over a beachgoer.

The Horry County Police Department said Lance l. Julian Brown was driving a police truck when he struck and killed Sandra Schultz-Peters, 66, on the beach Thursday.

The family of a 66-year-old Myrtle Beach woman is mourning her death after tragedy struck while she was relaxing on the beach.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol said the truck was coming onto the beach from Nash Street beach access when it turned onto the sand and hit Schultz-Peters.

Brown has been with the Horry County Police Department since 1988. He has served as the beach safety director and has previously been honored by South Carolina state lawmakers for “significant, life-saving work with the junior lifeguard program in Myrtle Beach.” He also received the Law Enforcement Commendation Medal in 2022.

Brown was placed on istrative leave after the death, which is still under investigation.
