After being called out last week for having the highest kill rate in the state, the Augusta animal shelter wants to change.

The Augusta animal shelter could use some volunteers right now, managers say.

The grant helps reduce the strain of overpopulation on Georgia’s animal shelters by providing financial assistance for low-cost spay/neuter programs in communities across the state.

The program received $800,000 in funding for Fiscal Year 2024.

Local groups getting the grants include:

  • Helping Hands Humane Society in Taliaferro County, $4,500
  • The Bullpen Way Station in Warren County, $3,000
  • Burke County Animal Services, $2,000
  • Southern Souls Rescue Inc. in McDuffie County, $1,250
  • The DAWG Squad of Georgia Inc. in Wilkes County, $1,050
