In Waynesboro

A fire at an apartment building in Waynesboro displaced a total of 21 people in four families on Wednesday.

It happened on Briarwood Court in a building with two lower units and two upper units.

The fire was confined to a lower unit. The unit above received heat, smoke and water damage, while two other units got slight smoke and water damage.

Power had to be cut off to all units for an inspection of the electrical system, so the occupants of all four units were displaced.

The fire started in the front bedroom of a downstairs unit and vented out the window, damaging the upper unit bedroom window and roof area, Fire Chief Robert H. Parrish III said.

Crews were notified at 10:19 a.m. and arrived at 10:23. They had the fire under control at 10:30, Parrish said.

“At this time, it appears that the fire was caused by a child playing with a sparkler in the bedroom,” the fire chief said.

The Red Cross is helping the displaced families.

Around 9 a.m., crews were able to turn off the water and began to assess the damage.
