Search will continue for new Augusta parks and recreation director

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - The search continues for a new Augusta parks and recreation director.

The Augusta Commission discussed the vacancy during a work session Thursday.

The position was first opened in March and closed on April 6. Augusta Interim Takiyah Douse said more than 58 people applied, but only 16 met all the qualifications.

The job will be reposted July 1, and the position will close again July 31.

The commission is requesting an update around Labor Day on applications and finalists.

City human resources staff say they’ll have an update at the commission’s Aug. 13 meeting

Maurice McDowell resigned as head of the department in February, leaving with severance as he faced a penalty after a human resources inquiry found evidence of age discrimination.

In addition to filling the vacancy, commission have been grappling with selecting a firm to audit the department.

In other matters ...

  • Commissioners on Thursday approved a resolution authorizing the issuance of $80 million in bonds and the refunding of the Water and Sewer Bonds Series 2012 for Water and Sewer Capital Projects. That would include $20 million on the canal, 20 million on water line breaks and $20 million on the sewer system.
  • Disposal was approved for forfeited or abandoned firearms for the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office to Century Arms in the amount of $267,518. The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office told commissioners 1,735 guns were forfeited or abandoned – a number that’s risen in recent years.
  • Augusta Commission approved the deed of dedications, maintenance agreements and road resolutions submitted by the Engineering Department and the Augusta Utilities Department for Captain’s Corner Phase I. The new subdivision is near Robinson Avenue and Gordon Highway just outside Grovetown.
  • The current citywide information technology policies were given to commissioners. They were told the city is kicking off a campaign for all employees to participate in training in July. This comes a little over a year after a cyberattack crippled many city services for a time.
  • Moses Todd addressed commissioners about city-owned cemeteries and using SPLOST 9 money for care. He requested that $6.5 million to go toward three city-owned cemeteries for road repairs, roofs on buildings and overall maintenance.
  • Commissioners OK’d a motion to approve funding of operating, capital and encumbrance carryovers.
