2 Columbia County softball teams get once-in-a-lifetime experience
ATLANTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - A 10U softball team and a 12U softball team from Columbia County have qualified for the Braves Country Championship tournament in Atlanta this weekend.
Braves Country baseball and softball is a youth organization put on by the Atlanta Braves that holds league and all-star tournaments for kids.
Only six teams in the 12U age group made it to the Braves Country Championships — four from Georgia, one from South Carolina and another from Tennessee.
Augusta University basketball star lives out lifelong dream
Making the trip across the Atlantic and landing in Augusta was the best thing for one Augusta University basketball star.
Two of the coaches for Columbia County’s 12U team are First Alert Meteorologist Tim Strong and his brother Scotty Strong.
“I love being able to hang out with my dad, and of course, my brother and our daughters. We just love hanging out with each other and playing and that shows. When you come and watch these girls play, they’re going to have a good time,” said Scotty.
Tim said: “It’s been almost 100 degrees every day we’ve been playing, but they’re still coming out here and having a ball, and they really have just gotten so close with one another and have really enjoyed themselves. This is 11–12-year-old rec, but these girls are really talented and have put a lot of hard work in.”
To kick off the weekend festivities, all of the teams who made it to the championship round took part in a parade on the field at Truist Park ahead of the Braves Game.
Getting the chance to walk around a ballpark like that, where so many legendary players have played, could be a once-and-a-lifetime experience for everyone involved, and it’s clear the kids were having a lot of fun.
Pool play begins in Atlanta on Saturday, ahead of the single elimination tournament on Sunday.
