Evans Knights fortify their castle on the gridiron
EVANS, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - When the season begins, every team believes they have what it takes to be the last team standing and win a state title.
Those championship expectations are alive and well for the Evans football program.
A first-round playoff exit wasn’t exactly what the Evans Knights had in mind for last season.
You can bet Head Coach Barrett Davis is fortifying the castle to keep his army on the right path.
Harlem High football team gears up for deep playoff run
Head Coach Mark Boiter has put his Bulldogs on the right path in recent years, and they might have the group to sustain that level of play.

The key to making the playoffs and possibly a state championship run has always been winning your region games.
Evans went 3-3 in their region last year, to squeeze into that fourth and final playoff spot.
One of the strengths for the Knights this season should be their play in the trenches.
“We’ve got a lot of young guys that are going to have to step up this year. We feel our offensive line kind of got our majority continuity coming back, but our theme has been D.A.T.E. Discipline, attitude, toughness, and effort, so you control those things. We’re not going to teach those things you’re going to do those things. We pay attention to the small details and that’s what adds up to the big picture in life, in work, in football, it all works together,” said Davis.
2 Columbia County softball teams get once-in-a-lifetime experience
A 10U softball team and a 12U softball team from Columbia County have qualified for the Braves Country Championship tournament in Atlanta this weekend.

Under the new GHSA realignment class 7A no longer exists, which means all of the 7A schools got pushed down to 6A, 6A to 5A, and the list goes on.
The Evans Knights are one of the teams sliding down to class 5A, and now they’re in the same region as Lakeside and Greenbrier.
Less classes means more teams in each region, all competing for the same amount of playoff spots.
“It added more teams into the region, so now instead of eight teams, we’ve got nine or ten teams that are fighting for four playoff spots. So, it just makes it a little more competitive to try to get into the playoffs. That’s really all that changes. It gives you fewer non-region games and more games that actually count. So, you’ve got to figure out early on what you’re good at and try and do it because game three, those count for you,” said Davis.
The Evans Knights will open up the new season with a non-region game against the Thomson Bulldogs on August 16.
