Westside High football team eyes post-season return
AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - The old saying goes “Rome wasn’t built in a day,” and the same goes for football teams who have dreams of making the playoffs and winning a state championship.
When it comes to winning in sports, everyone always talks about the idea of teams or players taking their lumps.
For the Westside football team, this season could be the year where we see all their hard work pay off.
Over the past couple of seasons, a lot of young players have seen the field for Westside.

When the season begins, every team believes they have what it takes to be the last team standing. Those championship expectations are alive for the Evans football program.

After going through their fair share of struggles, those young players now have the opportunity to put their experience on full display for everyone to see.
In football, depth is crucial to having success. Not only because of the physical grind of the sport and the possibility of injuries, but because the more players you have competing for a starting job, the more quality players you have to use across your roster.
“It’s an opportunity for kids to get out here and grow. A chance for kids to get out of here and compete. We tell our kids all the time, don’t be satisfied being a two or a three, you want to get to being a one or a two. So it gives kids an opportunity to get out here and compete and get on film, gives us a chance to evaluate those guys,” said Westside Head Football Coach Lee Hutto.
The Patriots will be looking to make the playoffs for the first time since the 2021-2022 season.
The Westside Patriots will be on the road to kick off the new season against the Laney Wildcats on August 16.
