SUMMERVILLE, S.C. - A South Carolina man lost his life in a Fourth of July fireworks accident.

The Dorchester County Coroner’s Office said Allen Ray McGrew, 41, died after igniting a “large firework device” and setting in on top of his head.

The coroner says the fireworks exploded on top of his head and caused extreme head injuries.

Deputies said the victim had been attending a neighborhood block party at the time of the incident. Details also confirm that bystanders attempted to stop the incident.

It happened around 10:20 p.m. Thursday in the 100 block of Cottonwood Drive in the Crestwood Subdivision in Summerville.

Upon arrival, deputies and EMS located a man lying on the road suffering from major injuries. He was pronounced dead at 11:10 p.m.

Last year, about 9,700 emergency room visits were due to injuries caused by fireworks.
