AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - There’s nothing like a game of basketball to bring people together, especially for gun violence.

But Sunday evening families, friends, and leaders played for more than a win.

“When does it stop, when does it stop? So, the emotions are overwhelmingly sad,” said David Mew.

Suspicious death: Body found behind house in south Augusta

A body was found Monday morning behind a south Augusta house, and authorities are investigating it as a suspicious death.

Crime scene tape

Between the recent shoot-out downtown, another shooting at the Augusta Mall and the murder of a teen on Friday night, David Mew says enough, is enough.

“This past weekend, a 16-year-old just lost his life. We’re here for a young man who lost his life too early due to gun violence so gun violence is where we need to stop,” said Mew.

Mew says it stops where this rally starts. On the court helping the next generation, play this game called life.

What’s behind Augusta’s alarming problem with violent crime?

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office Special Operations Division tells us gang violence is the root of almost all violent crime here. What can be done about it?

“Put down the guns for once. Words don’t scar that’s what people say,” said Mew.

In the past month, two Black teens in our area have died from gun violence.

And Mew says you can no longer cover it with a bandage.

“It’s almost like you lose hope. You lose vision you see this happen rapidly at a regular rate,” said Mew.

Also weighing in is the man who’s set to become Richmond County’s next sheriff.

“And together, we can make it happen,” Eugene Brantley says.

There will be more gun violence events to attend in the months. In August, there is a “Dirt Bikes: Guns Against Violence” event.
