AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - It’s been a little more than a week since a massive fire impacted families at the Nine Two Six West apartment complex, and now the donations are pouring in.

One of the victims is a teacher at Gracewood Elementary School.

Now, Gracewood’s principal is stepping up to help not only her teacher but other victims impacted by the fire.

Donations were brought to Gracewood Elementary from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Thursday.

The school is hoping that these donations will help the victims of the fire that destroyed 16 apartments last week.

“I immediately thought about what we could do. Ya know, we need to do something to help her,” said Renee Perry, principal at Gracewood Elementary School.

Perry says she started gathering everything from furniture to clothes to help her staff member but it turned into something much bigger.

“As far as Thomson to Evans to Wrens, even South Carolina. And before I knew it, we had all of these things that were being offered,” said Perry.

Perry says 80 to 100 people have dropped off donations since Monday. She hopes to get enough to help all 16 families.

“We’ve had about 50% of those families already to come through,” she said.

Three rooms are filled with items, but they are still in need.

“Sofas, chairs and lamps. We have plenty of dishes but towels, and household items and still in need of a few more sheets as well,” said Perry.

Thanks to the community, Gracewood’s teacher is taken care of, but other families are still waiting for some good news.

“We’ve been getting their name and their number so that if something that they need is not here at that moment, we put it on hold for them,” said Perry.

If you have donations you’d like to drop off, volunteers will be at the school from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Friday.
