Edgefield delegate calls security ‘intense’ at GOP convention
AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - Hundreds of political figures are in Milwaukee for the Republican National Convention.
Among them is Scott Cooper from Edgefield County, representing South Carolina.
He was there last night when former President Donald Trump made his first public appearance after being shot.
“We’re grateful and just having him there was an inspiration and seeing that he is well. He was very moved being there,” said Cooper. “We need calm, civil discourse in this nation, and we need reasoned people to engage in the civic arena that is not going to be extreme. I think both sides have a lot of anger for various reasons. We cannot enter the arena with anger, and we have to have common sense solutions to the problems we face.”
Violence has no place in politics, Georgia and South Carolina leaders say
The Donald Trump shooting can seem to shake the stability of democracy, especially for the couple of generations that haven’t seen a serious assassination attempt.

Scott also talked about security so far at the convention.
“It is intense. It’s very secure and I don’t think anyone here is in jeopardy. There’s a perimeter around the arena where the convention is held and you can’t get inside the perimeter without going through metal detectors and being sniffed by dogs and getting your bags checked, so it’s very secure,” said Scott.
Tuesday’s theme at the convention is ‘making America safe again’ with a focus on ing law enforcement and border security.
