Local groups give supplies, resources to new parents in need
AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - New and experienced parents may be getting sticker shock from the cost of diapers, but here in Augusta, local organizations are lending a hand.
On Wednesday, the Department of Health hosted a Diaper Day.

People could find any baby supplies they needed - diapers, wipes and even car seats.
“I want to be prepared. I want to be able to say, you know, I did this by myself, and I was able to provide for my child,” said Zikera Campbell, expecting mother.
As an expecting mother, Campbell says it’s easier said than done.
“It just hard for pregnant women to find a job. The moment they find out you’re pregnant they ain’t calling you back,” she said.

Community gathered at Daniel Field Airport to recognize Kyzer and Rachel Mack for their service to the community.

Campbell says she’s ing the line of mothers to get everything she needs while she can.
Several organizations say the cost of diapers is up 48 percent since the pandemic.
The Health Department says they see that number reflected in Augusta’s needs.
LisaAnn Wheeler is the patient navigator at the Georgia Department of Public Health. She said, “It’s paramount that I mean, people are trying to find afford food, they’re trying to forward prescriptions, diapers, wipes. It’s very difficult.”
Campbell says she believes everyone will make it through as long as the community keeps helping.

“It might be hard. You might want to shed a tear, but we’ve all been there done that and we got this,” she said.
The Health Department and Amerigroup put on these diaper days every other month and they are encouraging donations from the community to help those in need.
This weekend, Molina Health Care of South Carolina will come together with two organizations to hold a community baby shower in Aiken.

Organizers say up to 150 expecting and new parents can pick up diapers, wipes and other baby supplies, courtesy of Molina.
There will be games and resources available too.
It’s happening at the Rural Health Services Office on Clyburn Place this Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon.
