ORANGEBURG, S.C. (WCSC) - An Orangeburg man will spend the next seven years behind bars after a traffic stop resulted in officers finding guns and drugs intended for distribution.

According to the United States Department of Justice, Chad Lavell Williams Jr., 30, was sentenced Friday to 84 months in federal prison and three years of court-ordered supervision after pleading guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition as well as possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine and dipentylone.

The traffic stop happened back on Feb. 25, 2023. The Orangeburg Department of Public Safety initiated the traffic stop for a broken taillight; however, Williams provided a fake name when officers requested identification.

They deployed drug detection dogs in the vicinity of the car and, following a positive K9 alert, searched the car. They found a Glock 22 pistol with a machine gun converter, known as a “Glock switch,” and an extended magazine. Additionally, officers found ammunition, brass knuckles and plastic bags of drugs “intended for distribution.” The DOJ says Williams itted the gun and drugs belonged to him.

Williams was prohibited under federal law from possessing firearms because of prior convictions for strong-arm robbery, grand larceny, 3rd and 2nd-degree burglary and a pending 1st-degree burglary charge.

This case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives as well as the Orangeburg Department of Public Safety.
