EVANS, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - The Junior Achievement Discovery Center is getting ready to open its doors to students for their first full year.

They opened in January and gave 6th and 7th graders real-world experience in business and finance.

On Wednesday, the discovery center held a teacher orientation where they shared what they do but also provided curriculum and materials that teachers can use in the classroom.

All kids to get free meals at Richmond County schools this year

Every student in the Richmond County School System will receive breakfast and lunch at no charge when the 2024-2025 school year starts next week.

Clever offering free school breakfasts and lunches for children in the community.

Some teachers were already familiar with the discovery center and had students come through before.

“So, they really get to see what life was like. The money that they made, how much things cost and they were able to put it together. How much a house cost, how much a car cost. Everything their parents do, they now had to see what that was like for them,” said 7th grade teacher, Ashley Price.

Students will learn in the classroom, and then come to the discovery center where they will work in the 20 storefronts which resemble local, national and statewide employers.

Director of Development Ashley Whitaker said: ”They’ll use this simulation space to see what it’s like to pay bills, and what expenses are needs versus wants and they get a little taste of what they can potentially be doing once they’re done with their education and thinking about those next steps.”
