AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - Starting school at the Columbia County Performing Arts Center wasn’t the plan for Westmont families this school year.

Emotions running high at open house-some excited, and others visibly upset - but most families tell me they are trying to make the best of it.

LIST: School closures due to possible impacts from Debby

Some school districts are announcing closures ahead of Tropical Storm Debby, which will bring the potential for lots of rain across the CSRA, especially in southern and eastern counties.

The first week of school will be unlike any other for the Nichols family.

“So although it is a little frustrating that they won’t be starting in their actual school. I’ve talked with them, and we’re looking at it kind of like, this is an adventure,” said Heather Nichols.

They’ll be starting at the PAC. After construction delays prevented the doors at Westmont from opening.

But it’s an adventure she says her family is ready for.

“Plan A didn’t work out. Plan B, let’s make the best of it. So I think they are going to take full advantage of the chaos and turn this into an experience that’s exciting and fun for them” said, Nichols.

She says she’s using this experience as a teaching moment.

“I would rather them take the time that it needs to make sure that the school is done right and done safely, and then my children return to a school that’s not going to become a hazard to them,” said Nichols.

Despite the obstacles first day butterflies remain the same.

“I’m so excited to see their excitement in the morning, getting ready, getting dressed, you know, and then getting to school, and then what they’re having, them tell me what their first day was like”, said Nichols.

And not only are parents excited but so are the teachers. The PE teacher at the school tells us the building doesn’t make the school- the people do.
