Ga. parents push for federal summer lunch program as clock ticks
ATLANTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - Georgia parents are pleading with Gov. Brian Kemp to reconsider his view of a federal summer meals program.
SunBucks is a federal program through the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The program offers families $120 per student if they qualify for free or reduced meals during the school year.
The deadline for the 2025 school year is Thursday.

Piles upon piles of meth trafficked across the Mexican border were found in a truckload of celery and seized at the Atlanta State Farmers Market.

A ParentsTogether petition is asking governors in the 13 states who have turned down to reconsider their decision. The petition has over 3,000 signatures.
Tasha Miller of Augusta signed the petition.
“All we’re asking is that you put our kids and our families first. We’re utilizing a food pantry right now and we can go once a week,” said Miller.
‘Everybody is family’: Community honor CSRA soldier
A small town is ing a Georgia National Guard soldier who died at the end of July. Friends say he was full of joy and laughter.

U.S. Sen. Jon Ossoff and several Georgia Democrats in Congress wrote a letter to Kemp urging him to change his mind.
“These federal resources to help families feed their kids are available for the state of Georgia. I’d urge the governor to accept these federal resources to help families across Georgia afford food for the summertime,” said Ossoff.
Kemp’s office has received the letter, a spokesperson said.
New AARP poll shows Ga. toss-up between Trump, Harris
A new poll from the American Association of Retired Persons shows the battleground state of Georgia to be a tossup between Kamala Harris and the man her boss ousted from the Oval Office four years ago, Donald Trump.
In July, his office said, “while it is disappointing that the Biden istration continues to ignore reasonable concerns surrounding the program’s lack of nutrition standards and fiscal sustainability, we will continue to promote the many successful programs Georgia already has in place, the most notable being GaDOE’s Seamless Summer Option, which alone provided millions of breakfast and lunch meals to students statewide last year and are tailored to address our state’s specific needs by providing necessary nutrition and engagement to families and kids.”
Georgia Democrats are holding a call on Tuesday to try to rally to urge Kemp to reconsider.
