Aiken County Board of Education member resigns

AIKEN, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - Aiken County Board of Education member Dwight Smith has resigned, officials announced at Tuesday’s meeting.

He resigned Sunday night for personal reasons, board Chairman Cam Nuessle said Tuesday.

The board accepted his resignation.

Nuessle noted that Smith had spent his entire working career, 38 years, with the district.

“I think of three words when I think of Mr. Smith: His ion, his fire and his dedication to the district and the community he served,” Superintendent Dr. Corey Murphy said at the meeting. “His presence on his board will be greatly missed.”

Smith served as a teacher, coach/head coach, athletic director, school bus driver, alternative school instructor, assistant principal, principal and school board member.

He graduated from Graniteville High School and earned a Bachelor of Arts from Newberry College in physical education and recreation and a Master of Education in istration and Supervision from the University of South Carolina.
