NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - If you use the North Augusta Greeneway, heads up — a large part of the walkway is closed the rest of the week.

At the Martintown Road bridge, there are barricades blocking off the bridge. There is also a sign saying the Greeneway is closed from Martintown Road to Knotty Pine Drive.

And that’s because they say it was a safety hazard. Trees were uprooting the asphalt and causing people to trip.

But the Greeneway will soon have a smoother look.

“It is kind of a bumpy road. There are a lot of bumps,” said a viewer who uses the Greeneway.

The repairs stretch from the Martintown Road bridge to Knotty Pine Drive.

Those who normally bike or jog on the Greeneway have had to find new routes this week.

“So, I usually start at Pisco Road, and I do from Pisco Road six miles or so. And I do that round trip. But now, because it’s blocked, it’s basically cutting in half. So, I do from here to the activity center until they open it back up,” said Nathaniel Moral, who bikes and jogs the Greeneway.

He says this is something they do routinely and will more than likely not be the last time it happens this year.

But the repairs come after they had some complaints about the asphalt causing people to trip and ahead of the Ironman Triathlon in September.

Some say having to transport their bike just to ride it on the Greeneway is an inconvenience. But others say they don’t mind.

“I was talking to another biker yesterday, and he was actually saying that he was glad that they’re actually fixing it because it is a little bumpy out there,” said Morel.

The construction is supposed to last until Friday.
