Orangeburg County district gets $40M for elementary school
ORANGEBURG, S.C. (WIS) - The Orangeburg County School District was awarded $40 million on Tuesday night to construct a new elementary school.
South Carolina Superintendent Ellen Weaver announced the grant at Tuesday night’s school board meeting as part of a broader initiative to fund educational projects statewide.

School officials said they have a limited availability of beds in on-campus residence halls and off-campus space leased by the SC State Housing Foundation.

The new facility is set to be Robert E. Howard Elementary School. Per a bond referendum ed in November 2022, the original plan was to convert the Robert E. Howard Middle School into an elementary school that would serve students from Brookdale, Mellichamp and Whittaker elementary schools.
However, the grant will now allow the distioct to construct an entirely new facility.
Aiken County Board of Education member resigns
Aiken County Board of Education member Dwight Smith has resigned, officials announced at Tuesday’s meeting.

“This grant represents a critical step forward for OCSD and the community it serves,” said Weaver. “By investing in new, modern facilities, we are ensuring that students have access to the best possible learning environments.”
Construction for the Robert E. Howard Elementary School is set to begin in January 2025.
