USC Aiken welcomes record number of freshmen this year

AIKEN, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - The University of South Carolina Aiken welcomed 695 new freshmen this week for the start of the 2024-25 academic year, the most in university history.

Classes started Tuesday.

Coupled with increases in transfer and continuing student enrollment, the university has set a new enrollment record for the current academic year with nearly 4,000 students, up 12% from the year prior.

Schools in the Palmetto State are working to get more nurses in the classrooms as a report projects South Carolina will have the seventh-largest nurse shortage in the nation in a dozen years.

In addition, the university’s residence halls are near capacity, with nearly 800 students choosing to live on campus.

“We’re fortunate that students and families continue to choose USCA to further their academic and professional aspirations,” said Chancellor Dr. Daniel Heimmermann, adding that the school is “hyper-focused” on its students.

The , career counseling, communication, personalized attention and mentorship at the school ultimately lead to lifetime success and upward social mobility, Heimmermann said.

“That’s a calling we’re proud to own,” said the chancellor.

After Labor Day, the university plans to open a new student success center on the first floor of the Gregg–Graniteville Library, which will include centralized access to advisement, tutoring, and financial services.

Top majors among new students include nursing, business istration, applied computer science, biology, undeclared, exercise and sports science, mechanical engineering and psychology.

Interstate 20 isn’t the only big construction project in town. Crews are working on a paving project on Whiskey Road in Aiken.

Also contributing to the growth is the university’s introduction of several new academic programs for the 2024-25 academic year, including:

  • New bachelor’s degree offerings in public health and software engineering.
  • New master’s degree program offerings in computer and information science and educator leadership.
  • New certificate programs in real estate, strategic communication and Spanish for the clinical encounter.
