Name released for man fatally run over by trailer outside North Augusta

AIKEN, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - The Aiken County Coroner’s Office on Wednesday released the name of a 42-year-old man who died after being run over by a trailer outside North Augusta.

Coroner Darryl Ables says Abel Lopez Cruz, of Augusta, has been confirmed to be the victim of the accident on Aug. 16.

Officials say the incident took place just after 4 p.m. in the 6000 block of Northside Drive.

Murphey Middle School announces deaths of 2 students

Two students from Murphey Middle School have died over the weekend, according to school officials.

According to authorities, a 2004 Chevy pickup was traveling east on Northside Drive towing a trailer while the victim was standing in the bed of the truck picking up traffic cones, when he fell off and was run over by a trailer the truck was pulling.

Emergency responders took Cruz to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The Aiken County Coroner’s Office along with South Carolina Highway Patrol are continuing to investigate.
