MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WMBF/Gray News) - A 15-year-old boy from North Carolina drowned while on vacation in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Edwin Gonzalez-Rosendo and another swimmer were “in distress” while in the water Saturday evening, according to authorities.

Lifeguards, ocean rescue crew and beach patrol swimmers got in the water to rescue them. The other swimmer was rescued, but Edwin disappeared.

Edwin’s body washed ashore Sunday evening, according to Chief Deputy Coroner Tamara Willard.

Myrtle Beach Police are investigating his death.

Edwin’s sister, Jazmin Gonzalez-Rosendo, said Monday would have marked his first day of high school. She said her brother planned to serve in the military and loved to play soccer. She also described the him as someone who had a cheerful nature, bright smile and kind heart.

She said their lives are now forever changed.

“We’re thankful that at least we got his body back. Not the way we wanted to, but at least we have this and we have closure now,” she said.

The family has started a GoFundMe to help with Edwin’s funeral costs.
