Health care options continue to grow in Columbia County
EVANS, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - The state of health care in Columbia County is adding roots.
Doctors Hospital is set to transform a vacant building that used to be home to Fatz Cafe.
“We are very excited to be able to open our new freestanding emergency department in Evans,” said Joanna Conley, CEO of Doctors Hospital of Augusta.
It’s something Conley says has been a long time coming.
“We know there’s a lot of need for emergency services there, and historically, many of the residents of Columbia County have come to Doctor’s Hospital for their emergency care,” said Conley.
Georgia Power invests $200K to boost Augusta’s teacher workforce
Georgia Power has committed $200,000 to Augusta University to help improve the quality of the teacher workforce in Richmond County.
Doctors Hospital of Augusta applied for a certificate of need for the state of Georgia in 2020.
They are finally beginning construction for the emergency room this fall.
“Treatment rooms, including one trauma room. It will also have CT, X-ray, laboratory and pharmacy,” said Conley.
Conley says right now, they do not have an exact number of how many jobs this will provide for those in Columbia County. But they will post job openings for the new ER when construction begins.
But if people are looking for a job right now, Conley says, “We have a number of positions open in nursing, radiology services, laboratory, dietary, other services.”

Fans of the Georgia Bulldogs and the Clemson Tigers are already competing ahead of Saturday’s football game.
This is not the only ER coming to Columbia County — a separate Wellstar Columbia County Hospital is currently underway.
Lisa Kaylor is with Augusta University Health, and she says the structural steel is almost complete and the exterior is next.
Construction is on track, and they are expected to finish by mid-2026.
Conley says the Doctors Hospital ER is expected to be finished by the end of 2025.
