JOHNSTON, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - Edgefield County schools are replacing all four playgrounds in the district and making them ADA-accessible for students.

The school board approved the project in a special meeting called on Monday.

District officials are projecting the costs to be $1.5 million.

They say the decision comes after increased student enrollment over the years, and the need to make their equipment fully accessible for their students with disabilities.

S.C. school district drops policy that set lowest grade at 50%

“The thing that frightens me about that policy is that it seemed to suggest that you don’t have to do your best,” School Board Chairman Ralph Canty said.

Mason McKie is a first-grade student at Merriweather Elementary School and says he has a list of things that are a must for the new playground.

“I hope they add more slides and swings. That’s the best part about the park,” said McKie.

The district says the next step is working with contractors to make plans for the playgrounds.

They say there is no timeframe yet as to when things will be finished.
