Suspect pleads guilty to manslaughter in Waynesboro slaying

WAYNESBORO, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - A suspect has taken a plea deal in a 2021 shooting that killed one man and injured others at a Dowell Avenue apartment in Waynesboro.

Johnathan Terrell Hughes appeared in a Burke County courtroom on Aug. 21, pleading guilty to voluntary manslaughter and one count of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

A man was arrested in Aiken County after he held a gun to another man’s head during a dispute over a bicycle, according to deputies.

In addition to the three years of confinement for the manslaughter charge, Superior Court Judge John Flythe sentenced him to 17 years of probation.

The possession charge added five years of probation.

He received credit for time served.

New suspect charged in Edgefield County abuse, death of child

A 30-year-old man has been charged after the ongoing abuse and death of a 3-year-old child, according to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.

Jason Cuyler was also a suspect in this case, and his case is still open.

During the early morning hours of Nov. 7, 2021, police responded to an apartment on Dowell Avenue following reports of a shooting, according to the Waynesboro Police Department.

At the scene, they located a deceased Black male, later identified as Marquel Tarber, in the front yard near the apartment’s front steps.

Hughes was initially charged with murder, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and two counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, according to Burke County Sheriff’s Office arrest records.

Cuyler was initially charged Nov. 11 with aggravated assault, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

Both Hughes and Cuyler were injured by gunfire, according to the Waynesboro Police Department. One other person received minor injuries from the incident as well.
