West Nile strikes in Augusta as cases soar with mosquitoes
Cases of West Nile virus are growing across the state – including in Augusta. And it probably won’t get better, considering the boom in mosquitoes fueled by the standing water Tropical Storm Debby brought.

The raccoon was submitted to the agency’s laboratory for testing on Aug. 29 and was confirmed to have rabies on Aug. 30.
If you believe you, someone you know, or your pets have come in with this raccoon, or another animal that potentially has rabies, call DPH’s Aiken office at 803-642-1637 during normal business hours or after hours and on holidays at 888-847-0902 (Option 2).
If you see an animal in need, avoid touching it and someone trained in handling animals, such as your local animal control officer, wildlife control operator, or a wildlife rehabilitator. Please report all animal bites, scratches, and exposures to potentially rabid animals to DPH.
It is important to keep pets up to date on their rabies vaccination, too.
