2 kids on ATV are among 7 killed in crashes across region
SALUDA, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - It’s been a deadly few days for roadways in South Carolina, with fatal crashes claiming seven lives – including two kids on an ATV – in Saluda, Orangeburg and Edgefield counties.
Saluda
The latest crash happened at 9:10 p.m. Sunday a mile south of Saluda.
A 2015 Chevy Camaro was northbound on Pencreek Road when it went off the right side of the road, hitting a culvert and fence before overturning and hitting two trees.
3 charged after 6-year-old shot in arm after Appling
Three people have been arrested after a 6-year-old was shot in the forearm in Appling, according to the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office.

The driver – the only person in the car – died at the scene.
The driver was later identified as Damion R. Gantt, 30 of Saluda.
The crash is being investigated by the Saluda County Coroner’s Office and the South Carolina Highway Patrol. An autopsy has been scheduled for later this week
Orangeburg
A Freightliner truck tractor collided with an all-terrain vehicle Saturday afternoon north of Orangeburg, killing two girls.
The victims were identified as 8-year-old Ania Chalk and 16-year-old Jada Fludd.
The collision occurred on U.S. Highway 601 near Scenic Drive, about five miles north of Orangeburg at approximately 4:20 p.m.
Master Trooper Gary Miller said a 2024 Freightliner truck tractor with a tailor was traveling north on U.S. 601 when the 2020 Kawasaki ATV was attempting to cross the highway and was struck by the truck.
Former Clemson wide receiver Diondre Overton shot dead in N. Carolina
Former Clemson wide receiver Diondre Overton, who helped Clemson to national championships in both 2016 and 2018, was shot dead.

The driver of the truck was the sole occupant and was not injured. The two girls were on the ATV.
Bowman
Two people are dead after a van collided head-on with a car Saturday morning near Bowman.
The head-on collision happened on Interstate 26 eastbound near the 159 mile marker, about five miles east of Bowman, at approximately 4:20 a.m.
Georgia fire battalion chief killed battling a tractor-trailer blaze
A battalion chief was killed in an explosion as he worked to put out a tractor-trailer fire on a Georgia highway, officials said.

Master Trooper Gary Miller said the 2011 Ford Crown Victoria was traveling east on I-26 and the 2003 Honda Odyssey van was traveling west on I-26 when the van struck the car head-on.
The driver of both vehicles was pronounced dead at the scene and the enger of the Ford was transported to MUSC Health Orangeburg.
The Orangeburg County Coroner’s Office has not yet released the identities of the victims.
Rowesville
In a separate accident, one person died after their car overturned around 6:55 a.m. on the side of the highway just outside Rowesville.
South Carolina Highway Patrol Master Trooper Gary Miller said a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado was traveling south on Highway 21 near Calhoun Street, about half a mile north of Rowesville.
The driver traveled off the right side of the road and flipped over. The driver died as a result of the crash.
The Orangeburg County Coroner’s Office has not yet released the name of the victim.
Johnston
One person died Friday when a sport utility vehicle and a tractor collided south of Johnston.
The deceased man was identified as Eduardo Hernandez Ortega, 29, of Ridge Spring, according to the Edgefield County Coroner’s Office.
The SUV and tractor collided around 3:42 p.m. on Highway 191 at Derrick Road, according to authorities.
Both were traveling north on Highway 191 when the SUV tried to as the tractor was turning, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
Ortega, who was driving the tractor, was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:05 p.m. according to authorities.
Officials say the Cadillac had two engers who were both injured and transported to a hospital.
