Aiken City Council hears details on 1% sales tax and tiny home ordinance
AIKEN, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - On Monday, the Aiken City Council heard a proposal from Superintendent Dr. Corey Murphy on the 1% sales tax and heard details on the tiny home park ordinance.
The proposal from Murphy touched on how the one percent educational capital improvement sales tax and use renewal will continue to help with school improvements such as additional parking, structural repairs and renovations.
10 years ago, the district funded projects like the new Aiken and North Augusta High School with the tax, but now it’s up for renewal.
Murphy says these improvements will help ensure the safety of students and staff.

Due to damage from Hurricane Helene, the polling location at Savannah Rapids Pavilion will be changed.
Voters will decide whether to keep the sales tax at the polls in November.
The next meeting to discuss the tax is at 6 p.m. at Midland Valley High School.
The city council also heard details on the tiny home park ordinance.
It requires these houses to have appropriate space between the road and the home.
The homes would be used as a social service, religious institution or non-profit entity.
The ordinance also limits free space to 20% of the property.
