ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - On Monday, families from across the country gathered for a “Say Their Names” rally outside the Georgia Capitol.

Many of the impacted families said their loved ones were killed by police. It’s the reason why mothers are gathering for National Police Brutality Week from Oct. 20-22. Impacted families are hoping to bring awareness, but also the lives lost.

Over the weekend, mothers who lost their children gave out senior care boxes in honor of 92-year-old Kathryn Johnston, who was allegedly shot by police in 2006 after she pulled out her revolver thinking they were intruders.

Now, mothers and other family demand that local, state, and federal agencies urgently act to end police brutality.

Over the years, Ashley McKenzie has been vocal about police brutality and how it has impacted so many, especially in Black communities. McKenzie’s 20-year-old son Jaylin was shot and killed by Memphis police during a traffic stop in 2022.

“We do know that everyone, at the end of the day, wants to go home,” McKenzie said. “It worries me when I can’t trust who is supposed to protect us not to kill us,” she said.

On Tuesday, a Day of Remembrance ceremony will be held at Centennial Olympic Park in Atlanta. There will be “Say Their Names” monument displays from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. There will also be a candlelight vigil for National Anti-Police Brutality Day at the Park at 7 p.m.
