SRS, food manufacturer come through with donations after Helene

On Monday, Augusta opened a community donation center, giving out water, diapers, formula, food and more to anyone in need.

AIKEN, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - Donated MREs and breaded chicken strips helped keep the CSRA fed as the community responded to the destruction of Hurricane Helene.

The MREs came from the Savannah River Site, while the chicken strips came from Gold Creek Foods.

SRS to the rescue

In a collaborative effort to local relief agencies recovering from Hurricane Helene, nearly 40,000 packaged meals ready to eat were recently distributed from the Savannah River Site.

Additionally, the site’s istrative and operations contractor, Savannah River Nuclear Services, contributed $50,000 to local American Red Cross efforts.

FEMA chief comes to Augusta for update on Helene recovery

The director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency was in Augusta to give an update on the response to Hurricane Helene.

The MRE delivery was made possible by the National Nuclear Security istration, the U.S. Department of Energy-Savannah River and SRNS.

SRS keeps a stock of MREs to ensure essential operations during emergencies.

“The MREs were originally purchased as a contingency to sustain operations during the COVID-19 pandemic and if not used, they would have expired in January,” said Michael Mikolanis of the National Nuclear Security istration. “This was a great win-win.”

Recipients of the MREs included the North Augusta Community Center, Aiken Regional Medical Center, Augusta University, MCG WellStar, Georgia East Central Public Health District, Burke County Emergency Management, South Carolina Fire Academy and Allendale Emergency Management.

Susan Landreth-Everitt, local executive director of the Red Cross, expressed gratitude for the financial donation.

“Our work is far from over,” she said. “With SRNS’ generous donation, we will be there to those in need as they recover in the weeks and months to come.”

A donation with ‘meaningful impact’

After Hurricane Helene cut a path of destruction through several states late last month, Gold Creek Foods in Gainesville, Ga., ed relief efforts by donating fully cooked, breaded chicken breasts strips to Augusta University.

“Augusta University distributed the products not only to the students, faculty and staff of the university but also to hospital employees and the community in need after the hurricane,” said Craig Goodman with Gold Creek Foods.
