AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - Happy Halloween! Get ready for a frightfully fun weekend as Augusta’s community centers and other locations transform into spooky havens for trick-or-treaters of all ages.

On Saturday, the Augusta Common became a Halloween domain. But if you missed the fun, don’t worry because there are Halloween events scheduled even beyond Halloween until Nov. 3.

It’s no surprise that Halloween looks different this year, but luckily, Hurricane Helene isn’t stopping the fun.

The plans by the Augusta Recreation and Parks Department will offer a safe alternative to trick-or-treating in neighborhoods that are still scattered with piles of debris from the storm.

Officials push extra Halloween safety precautions due to Helene debris

Thursday is Halloween and safety is top of mind as you take your children out for trick or treating.

Halloween safety after Hurricane Helene

“Not only is Halloween on a school night this year, but we’ve also just suffered a major, major hurricane,” said Jordan Johnson, a Grovetown public information officer.” A lot of the debris is still out on the sides of the roads, and obviously, that will present a problem to some trick-or-treaters.”

Traditional trick-or-treating may not be an option for everyone, but that doesn’t mean the fun has to stop.

“This event and events like these offer folks an opportunity to come get that Halloween feeling,” said Johnson. “To still get that thrill of trick or treating, and to still get all the candy.”

Grovetown has a trunk-or-treat event at Liberty Park on Friday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

“With the storm, we weren’t sure originally whether we were going to be able to continue to do it, but we’re blessed and grateful to say that we are still on,” he said.

Johnson says he hopes events like these give people some sense of normalcy.

“We want everybody out there, not only in Grovetown, but the community at large, to come out and celebrate Halloween with us,” he said.

Safety tips for trick-or-treaters from Piedmont Augusta:

Costume Considerations

  • Use non-toxic makeup or face paint for better vision in the dark. Perform a patch test to check for any irritation.
  • Choose costumes marked “flame resistant.”
  • Use flashlights and bright materials such as glow sticks and glow-in-the-dark paint or clothing for higher visibility.
  • Make sure accessories (canes, swords, etc.) have dull edges to avoid injury if your child accidentally slips.
  • Only use decorative lenses approved by an eye doctor.
  • Remove makeup, adhesives, and other potential irritants before going to bed.

Driver Safety

  • Stay alert and drive slowly through residential areas.
  • Take extra precautions near crosswalks, curbs, and sidewalks.
  • Keep your headlights on at all times when driving.

Prepping Your Yard for Halloween

  • Check your yard for any tripping hazards.
  • Pets should stay inside until all visitors are gone for the night.
  • Rake away leaves from your steps, mats, and driveway.
  • Use battery-powered candles instead of flame.
  • Turn on your porch lights.
