Finding Solutions: Toys for Tots helps provide Christmas for kids
AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - The end of the year is creeping up on us, and some organizations are already looking on to Christmas.
Toys for Tots collects new, unwrapped toys for kids in need so that they have gifts come Christmas day.
The group is already getting a start as they find solutions to filling the long lists of requests.
Toys for Tots has been bringing Christmas to kids since 1947.
Each year, the need seems to grow, and this holiday looks no different.
Local YMCA helps supply water to those in North Carolina
On Monday, we told you how the Family YMCA of Greater Augusta is working to get hundreds of pallets of water to North Carolina schools, and now we have an update.

“On October 14, within hours, we were overwhelmed. We had over 500 applications online, so we had to close it and make sure before we take the applications that we will be able to service the families,” said Anne Woods, assistant coordinator for Toys for Tots.
Woods says they also have received requests in person and from schools.
She says the best thing the community can do right now is donate.
“They can donate, and we can go buy what we need, or they can donate the toys themselves, and we are grateful for however they would like to do it. It’s always a blessing,” said Woods.
How culinary students are helping feed others
Helms College culinary students are stepping up to serve their community by preparing nutritious meals for students at Heritage Academy as part of recovery efforts following Hurricane Helene.

Just last year, they distributed nearly 70,000 toys, which brought a smile to 35,000 kids.
They’re already accepting donations at their warehouse and various locations across the CSRA.
“Usually, our 6 years old and up, we’re always trying to find stuff to buy and get people to donate and that’s always our problem each year,” said Woods.
Woods says they already have volunteers on deck weekly, making sure kids have their toys on Christmas day.
“Toys for Tots motto is it’s not , it’s about them,” said Woods.
