AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - A 15-year-old is dead after a Richmond County shooting on Wednesday evening, according to officials.

The Richmond County Coroner’s Office told us on Thursday that Devayn Grissam, of Augusta, was pronounced dead at 7:07 p.m.

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office says they responded to the 2300 block of Helsinki Drive in reference to shots fired with one person down at 6:23 p.m.

When deputies arrived, they found Grissam had been shot at least once.

An Augusta man has been charged in connection to the 2023 murder of a 19-year-old in Wrens.

He was taken to Wellstar/MCG by EMS, where he succumbed to his injuries, according to Richmond County Coroner Mark Bowen.

While deputies were at the hospital, another person arrived with at least one gunshot wound, deputies said. They are unsure if the two victims who were shot were involved in the same shooting or a different incident.

Investigators were on scene at 9 p.m. and they had no additional information at the time, deputies said.

Also on Thursday, Richmond County deputies say they are investigating the suspicious death of 59-year-old on Lumpkin Road.

The shooting comes amid an outbreak of violent crime that’s claimed more than 170 lives in a little over two years across the CSRA.

The crime outbreak has affected communities large and small, but as the biggest city in the region, Augusta has been hit especially hard.

Authorities have blamed much of the problem on gangs.
