Columbia County gives update on status of parks after Helene
EVANS, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - Columbia County Community Services Director John Luton gave an update on the status of the county’s parks on Thursday.
“We continue to monitor their conditions closely and want to ensure they are, and remain, safe and enjoyable for all our residents and visitors,” said Luton.
Wildwood Park
Luton says the Wilwood Park campground has suffered extensive damage.
“We’re currently addressing several issues, including tree removal, water line repairs, and electrical replacements throughout the park and the campsite areas,” he said.
He says they do not have an estimated time frame as to when the repairs will be complete and the park ready to reopen for reservations at their campsites. However, he did say that they have been able to open the boat ramps and associated bathrooms.
The Columbia County Racquet Center
Luton says the Columbia County Racquet Center needs to undertake major sidewalk reconstruction, have fallen trees removed from the tennis courts, replace fencing and repair the deck.
Euchee Creek Greenway
According to Luton, the parks maintenance team along with roads and bridges have been actively working to clear the greenway.
“We are happy to announce that the county’s portion of the greenway is now open and able except for the portion that runs through the Bartram Trail neighborhood. It is still closed and a work in progress,” said Luton.
He advises that you please continue to use caution when walking, running or biking the greenway as there are still areas that need minor repairs.

Savannah Rapids Pavilion
Luton says the Savannah Rapids Pavillion is closed for an extended period of time.
“The facility sustained major damage from a fallen tree, which caused flooding inside,” he said. “We’ll need to fully renovate this space once remediation is complete.”
He says they have reached out to all scheduled events to assist with rescheduling or issuing refunds.
Luton says he hopes to have an announcement regarding the park at Savannah Rapids and when you can expect the park to be open for use soon.
The latest update received from the city of Augusta is that the towpath from the Raw Water pumping station to Savannah Rapids Pavilion will remain closed to the public until further notice, according to Luton.
Fallen trees, erosion and other hazards along the path led officials to deem it unsafe to access according to their press release.
“We truly appreciate your patience and understanding as we work diligently to restore our parks. Your enjoyment and safety are our top priorities. Thank you for your continued , and we’ll keep you updated on our progress,” said Luton.
