Learn if you need a provisional ballot ahead of Election Day
AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - We learned from the Richmond County Board of Elections director there are cases for getting a provisional ballot.
If there is any question about your registration whether you don’t have your ID or there is a problem with your application and even if you went to the wrong precinct, you would get a provisional ballot.

You’ll put that ballot into a sealed bag and a poll worker will give you a notice that provides you with instructions on how to check if your ballot is counted.
For example, if a person votes with a provisional ballot because they feel they met the deadline to to vote, the board has three days to look into it and confirm.
Richmond County’s Board of Elections Director Travis Doss says a lot of times the person who’s doing the provisional voting, doesn’t have any other documentation or proof with them, like an ID.
Prepping for the polls? Here’s everything you need to know
As you prepare to vote on Tuesday, here’s everything you need to know before heading into the polls.

Doss says the majority of provisional ballots he sees in Richmond County are out of precinct.
On election day, everyone must vote at their assigned precinct. Doss says if you show up to the wrong precinct after 5 p.m., you’ll be able to vote with a provisional ballot.
Doss says the reason for that cut-off time is in case someone doesn’t have time to make it to their correct precinct before the polls close.

They give you a provisional ballot that is duplicated onto a ballot that you would have if you had shown up to the right polling place.
So, do provisional ballots have a huge impact on election results?
Doss says they typically only see about 20 to 30 provisional ballots during each election cycle.
He says since those ballots are spread out across the county, it usually has very little impact on a particular race.
