2 Georgia state questions win voters’ approval
AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - Georgia voters on Tuesday approved at least two of the three statewide ballot measures that went before them, and South Carolina voters approved the one question they faced.
Georgia Amendment 1
The Local Option Homestead Property Tax Exemption Amendment will allow the state Legislature to implement a statewide local-option homestead exemption from ad valorem taxes. It would apply to every county, consolidated government, municipality or local school system beginning Jan. 1, 2025.
A homestead property tax exemption reduces the amount of property taxes that a homeowner owes on their residence.
The measure was ing Tuesday night with 63% of the votes and 89% of precincts reporting.
Georgia Referendum A
The Personal Property Tax Exemption Increase Measure is also on the ballot. A “yes” vote ed increasing the personal property tax exemption from $7,500 to $20,000, while a “no” vote rejected it.
The measure was ing Tuesday night with 63.8% of the votes and 91.4% pf precincts reporting.
Georgia Amendment 2
The Creation of Tax Court Amendment would create the Georgia Tax Court with statewide jurisdiction; the court would also have equal jurisdiction with the state business court and superior courts in equity cases. A superior court could order the removal of a case to the business court or tax court.
Currently, Georgia has a tax tribunal, which is not a part of the state judicial system. A “yes” vote s the court’s creation, while a “no” vote opposes it.
The measure was ing Tuesday night with 51.9% of votes in favor vs. 48.1% against – not enough to call the vote in favor.
