AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - Head Start programs are available in Richmond County all thanks to the YMCA of Metro Atlanta.

Come next year, they’ll be serving up to 800 kids across five locations in the area.

They’re finding solutions in how they can help families set their little ones on the road to success.

The YMCA of Metro Atlanta provides Head Start programs to more than 2,200 kids throughout Georgia each year.

Despite having storm damage to their original location, the second annual Augusta Duck still went on as they worked to a great cause.

“So, when this opportunity became available for us to be the new Head Start grant recipient, we thought about and we knew what we do works, so why not bring it to Richmond County as well,” said Dr. Andria McMichael, senior vice president of early learning for the YMCA of Metro Atlanta.

Head Start is a free program designed to prepare 3- to 5-year-olds for school.

“The great thing is with Head Start we provide comprehensive service for children. So, not only are they getting top-tier instructions that are happening in the classroom to prepare them for the K12 space. We also offer family services as well as health services and social-emotional services,” said McMichael.

One local camp is left picking up the pieces after Helene caused so much damage. The damage has made the area almost unrecognizable and caused the camp to close down.

This week, three Head Start locations opened up across Richmond County, with two more locations set to open next year.

Right now, they have 300 kids enrolled with the goal of reaching 800.

“We’re starting in increments to make sure we are opening with efficiency to make sure we are providing the services needed to the family,” said McMichael.
