AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - This week is the last week of the regular season for high school football.

This season looked a little different as games got pushed back due to Hurricane Helene.

We caught up with parents ahead of the Laney vs. Josey game as they look back at this season.

Parents say it was a whirlwind of a season, not only battling tough teams but going through midseason struggles when Helene pushed games back.

Aiken High School volleyball has made it to the third round of the playoffs three times in the last four seasons.

It’s the final chapter of the regular season, and it came quickly.

“We had to rush everything that’s going on in a small amount of time. So, you know, pushing your body does extra things. It’s kind of a big thing, especially for these athletes,” said Laney High parent, Vergil Austin Jr.

While most seasons are drawn out, teams pushed through the games to reach November 8.

Georgia High School Association even gave a one-week extension.

Players and parents had to navigate through rescheduled games and canceled practices.

A senior season became an unconventional one. But like on the gridiron, life takes turns.

“Staying focused, being on the ground every day, still throughout the storm, of course, they had a couple of days off. But the grind doesn’t never stop on the Boulevard,” said Austin.

All that matters now is seeing number 55 help take his team all the way.

The South Carolina High School League’s executive committee voted to uphold sanctions against the War Eagles for the use of an ineligible student-athlete.

“Watching him be a gorilla in that field, making our mom and our family proud,” said Austin. “That’s all I want, is a ring. Let’s go.”

Laney took the lead from start to finish, winning 48-0.

Although the regular season may be in the books, teams like Laney are moving on to the playoffs as we continue toward normalcy.
