It happened just before 9:15 a.m. on Koger Street at Eagles Way, according to deputies.

Authorities aren’t saying much else about the case, but we do know the victim was a female and that the Richmond County Coroner’s Office hasn’t been called in.

In a statement issued at 1:22 p.m., deputies didn’t address whether the shooter was in custody or still being sought.

The Richmond County School System said although it happened off campus, the matter will be addressed by the Code of Student Conduct and Discipline.

At the scene Tuesday afternoon, two deputies were searching in a creek that runs under Eagles Way.

Murphey is adjacent to Josey.

Both schools, along with Jenkins-White and Wilkinson Gardens elementary schools, went on lockdown for nearly an hour after the incident.

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office is handling the investigation.

In the hours after the shooting, many parents showed up at Josey to pick up their kids.

Murphey parents were told in a letter from the principal that because of potential anxiety and distress, grief counselors would be available to provide immediate assistance to children.

The incident comes at a time when tensions have calmed somewhat at schools after being stirred up after the deadly shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder on Sept. 4.

In the aftermath of that tragedy, there was a spike in threats – both real ones and hoaxes – at schools across the region.

The shooting also comes amid a more than two-year outbreak of violent crime that’s claimed more the 180 lives across the CSRA.

Deputies have blamed gangs for much of the problem.
