AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - Arrest warrants shed light on an Augusta man who was arrested after the death of his 4-month-old son.

Deputies arrested Daveon Wood, 21, on Nov. 9 after the incident, according to Richmond County jail records.

We spoke with Aiden’s grandmother and she said it was a sad situation and something she couldn’t comprehend. She declined to comment on Wood.

According to arrest warrants, Wood struck his son, Aiden Wood by unknown means, several times.

“In a recorded conversation Daveon Wood is questioned on what he did to Aiden Wood. Daveon Wood stated ‘I just hit him a couple times. He was crying,’” according to the incident report.

Aiden was taken to Wellstar Pediatric MCG in critical condition after sustaining a “serious brain injury resulting in a brain bleed,” according to arrest warrants.

Aiken County Sheriff’s Office investigates child shooting

The Aiken County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a child shooting that happened early Monday in the 100 block of Tab Drive.

Aiden died several days later on Wednesday, according to an incident report from the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident happened in the 4300 block of Windsor Spring Road, according to officials.

The arrest warrants state Wood was involved in an altercation at a McDonald’s on Tobacco Road on Nov. 8.

Wood fled the scene intoxicated, leaving Aiden’s mother’s car unattended.

When she went to get her car, she left Aiden and her other child under the supervision of a family friend, according to the affidavit.

The arrest warrants say Wood came back to the home stating “he wasn’t going to jail,” and grabbed Aiden from the family friend’s arm, causing him to cry.

Witnesses told deputies Wood had come home intoxicated.

Wood forced the family outside, but they said they heard him trying to calm the child.

Shortly after, Wood came outside and said the child wasn’t breathing, according to a report from deputies.

Several family went to a fire station for aid, and Aiden ended up in a hospital.

At that point, Wood was already in jail, and deputies said they reviewed recorded jail phone calls made by Wood.

Wood is being held without bond in Richmond County jail on charges of cruelty to children in the second degree and murder, according to jail records.
