Community mourns woman killed in Orangeburg County flooding

BAMBERG, S.C. (WIS) - The funeral service was held in Bamberg for Valerie Goff, one of two people confirmed to have drowned from flash flooding in Orangeburg County.

The 66-year-old was found dead in her car that was submerged in flood waters on Nov. 8, after she was reported missing the day before.

“A joyful person, always smiling,” said Valerie’s son, Carmelle Goff.

Family, friends, and church on Saturday celebrated his mother Valerie Goff’s life Saturday at the Pilgrim Baptist Church in Bamberg after she drowned tragically from flood waters in Orangeburg after the Edisto River overflowed.

What he will most, is her loving heart for others.

“Always caring, willing to feed and help anybody out, always a good, kind-hearted person; that’s what she was,” Goff said, “She’s missed dearly from the church family and the community.”

Pastor Wilburt Davis also reflected on Goff’s life. He says he and Goff ed Pilgrim Baptist Church around the same time, helping build up the church choir, and other aspects of their church community.

He says her impact will be felt for years to come.

‘Human error’ blamed for monkey escape; 8 still on the loose

The CEO of the research facility from which 43 monkeys escaped earlier this month says after an inspection of the facility, human error is believed to be the cause of the incident.

“She was very instrumental in the works of the church,” Davis said, “I know it will leave a void in our hearts.”

Valerie’s family says they plan on remaining focal of this church community here so Valerie’s life and Legacy will never be forgotten.
