Paine College still suffering from Hurricane Helene damage
AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - Paine College is still seeing an impact from Hurricane Helene.
The college says recovery efforts have been difficult as not all of the repair costs can be covered by insurance or FEMA.
70% of the trees were destroyed and many buildings have roof and interior damage. The baseball field was also destroyed.
The damage is estimated to be around four million dollars.

Bamberg County leaders cut the ribbon on an infrastructure project Friday.
We spoke with Dr. Cheryl Evans Jones, president of Paine College, who discussed the storm’s impacts on campus upgrades.
“There was some damage done to those buildings, but already those buildings, two out of three of the buildings, which we received grants offline, so they were not already being used extensively, especially Hall, so we are doing careful assessments of all of those buildings to see what condition they are in now,” says Evans-Jones.
Doctor Evans Jones says they started a fundraiser last month to help with a goal of raising $750,000. So far, they have raised more than $100,000.
