Local students learn trades at East Georgia Skills Challenge

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - On Thursday, local students competed in the East Georgia Skills Challenge in 14 counties.

Students competed in skills like cabinetmaking, carpentry, electrical, welding and plumbing.

Other students worked on activities throughout the event to help familiarize them with different trades.

Blue Angels make trip to Augusta ahead of spring shows

The Blue Angels graced the river region’s skies on Thursday. They landed at Bush Field for some practice ahead of their show dates that start in the spring.

“The exposure to the trades and learning something about it, learning what the opportunities are. So, for middle schoolers who may not know exactly what they want to do, try to find out what you can learn about the trades and skills. You may learn you want to do carpentry or want to be a welder and the career you can have,” said Mike Dunham, CEO of Associated General Contractor of Georgia.

The winners will go to a state competition with Skills USA.

Some of the winners include Spencer Butler at Thomson High School, Joseph Jordan at Evans High School and Zach Grabb at Lincoln County High School.
