STATESBORO, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - What was already a regular season to for the Edmund Burke Spartans has now become a complete season to , while they chased back-to-back state titles.
They got it done against the Robert Tombs Crusaders in the GIAA state championship game.
Chasing state titles rarely ever comes easy, but that’s where Owen Redd comes in.
Mr. Reliable got the Spartans up 20-10 with just four minutes left to play.
The Crusaders needing an answer took just two plays and found the endzone.
Spartans were up 20-17 and if something works, don’t change it.
On fourth down, it was number 4 who got the call once again to put this one away.
“All credit to the lineman and all credit to God. We put everything together. The lineman made some adjustments at halftime and we put it all together in the second half. I mean it’s great to have the confidence of everyone on the team. They all looked to me when we had the fourth down. That’s a big confidence thing and all glory to them,” said Redd.
Redd’s performance lifted Edmund Burke to its second straight state championship trophy as they beat Robert Tombs 20-17.

While the GIAA doesn’t hand out MVP trophies, we’re gonna give this one to number 4.
The senior took every snap on Edmund Burke’s final two possessions and was even g autographs on popcorn buckets after the game.
“You know there was no doubt who was going to tote the ball and how they were going to get it so we were gonna get the ball in number 4′s hands as much as we could. I’m just so happy that he was able to finish runs and finish plays in this game,” said Head Coach Andy Woodard.
Woodard now has the only two state title victories in school history, and he will undoubtedly be chasing a three-peat next year.

On Friday morning, Burke County residents gathered to send the Spartans off to their big game.
A motorcade left at 10:30 a.m. and rode through Shadrack, then over to Eighth Street and onto Liberty Street before heading to Statesboro.
