AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - If you’re cooking for Thanksgiving, costs are down slightly at the grocery store. But costs will still be 42% higher than before the pandemic.

If you’re cooking, be careful.

Thanksgiving and the day before are the top two days in the country for home cooking fires – and Georgia is one of the top places where that happens.

That puts Augusta right at ground zero for cooking fires this week.

And if you’re not cooking, several restaurants are open, and community meals are planned.

Feasts

  • Nov. 28 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. the Salvation Army for a meal at the First Baptist Church, 120 Chesterfield Street N.
  • Nov. 28 at 1 p.m. Ft. Eisenhower MWR for a dinner. Tickets must be purchased.
  • Nov. 28 from 5:30 to 6 p.m. the Salvation Army of Augusta for a holiday meal at the Center of Hope, 1384 Greene Street.

Eateries

Many restaurants are offering alternatives so you don’t have to cook or deal with the mess.

That comes as many people aren’t able cook in their hurricane-damaged homes or else are just too exhausted for the ordeal of cooking after hurricane repairs and cleanup.

Fat Man’s has about 18 people working throughout the day on Thanksgiving and the day before, cooking and handing out the food.

The business keeps doing this because it takes the pressure off people.

Some other options:

  • S&S Cafeteria on Walton Way will be open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day.
  • Metro Diner on Washington Road will be serving to-go meals on Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving Day: Order by Tuesday, November 26th Christmas Day: Order by Monday, December 23rd Other Orders: Order 24 hours in advance
