2 months after Helene, FEMA continues to open recovery centers
AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - It’s been two months since Hurricane Helene tore through the CSRA – and new FEMA disaster recovery centers are continuing to open.
The latest ones opened this week in McCormick and Burke counties.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency says this comes after working with local emergency agencies to determine there is still a growing need for application and resource assistance.

One representative says people still have a lot of questions two months after the storm.
“One of the more common reasons why people are still going to these DRCs, these disaster recovery centers, in person is to actually follow up on the status of their applications,” said Hannah Kirschman, a FEMA media specialist.
“Some people might have questions about: Do they get funding for spoiled food from their power being out, what kind of assistance is FEMA giving to their local officials for debris cleanup, because we still see a lot of debris on the road, that kind of thing,” she said.
S.C. residents get another chance to apply for disaster food aid

FEMA says so far Aiken County alone has generated more than 41,000 applications.
The deadline is Jan. 7 to apply for individual assistance in Georgia and South Carolina.
