SARDIS, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - A man who was wanted on several felony counts, including escape, has been arrested, according to the Burke County Sheriff’s Office.

Maliek Lenard Butler was arrested on Dec. 3, according to jail bookings.

The incident report states that on Nov. 26, officials with the Sardis Police Department saw Butler walking down Davis Street with a rifle over his shoulder.

Officials say they recognized Butler as a convicted felon, asked him to lay the rifle on the ground and put him in handcuffs.

Butler then “snatched” himself from the grasp of the officer and left the scene, according to the incident report.

Officials say they recognized the rifle as one that had been stolen from a car the week before.

According to arrest warrants, on Sept. 24, around 1:30 a.m., Butler struck the victim in the head and face with a metal water container causing “serious bodily injury.”

Butler is charged with possession of heroin, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, escape, theft by taking, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, theft by receiving stolen property (felony) and aggravated assault.
