AIKEN, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - Back in March, we told you about a ministry in Aiken calling for help as they work to keep their doors open.

Mt Salem Ministries has been around for more than 20 years, serving those in need by providing food, shelter and resources to help people get back on their feet.

With the year coming to an end, the organization is finding solutions to how they will continue helping others in 2025.

It’s a non-profit organization that’s been around since 2003.

“We try to meet the needs of the community, and the homeless population is getting greater and greater in Aiken County,” said Director Robert Lane.

Mt Salem Ministries offers multiple programs and services for families and seniors who need an extra hand as well as an overnight shelter for men.

Wellstar MCG continues to expand care here

It’s been more than a year since Augusta University Health System was brought under the Wellstar umbrella. They tell us they’re continuing to find solutions in meeting healthcare needs here locally.

“We’ll meet any needs they have, and we can sleep up to 15 a night and we never know who is going to come in,” said Lane.

They rely on from the community and surrounding churches to keep their doors open.

However, Lane says the future of the ministry is still not looking clear.

“Right now, we are in need of dire need. We are in need of dire need of financial . We already cut back our programs right now and it has not been like this financially in 15 years,” he said.

On top of this, they’re working on figuring out what’s next for one of the buildings they serve lunch out of after a truck ran into it.

Lane says in the meantime, lunch will be served out of their shelter.

You will have the chance to the Children’s Hospital of Georgia this week. The 24th annual iHeart Media Cares for Kids Radiothon kicks off Thursday.

“We’re going to have to come back here and do the free lunch program here. We can’t use that free lunch building at all,” said Lane.

Lane says despite where they stand financially, he’s going to continue to help.

“As long as I’m breathing, I’m going to continue to do it, but when there’s no community it makes it hard,” he said.

We’re told they would like to find 1,000 people to commit to donating $25 a month.

They also are in need of mentors to volunteer.
