WASHINGTON, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - The Wilkes County School District is the first in Georgia and one of the only school districts in the country to transition to a fully clean school bus fleet.

School voucher program covers every Augusta student

Far more students than lawmakers expected – including every kid in Richmond County – ended up being eligible to seek vouchers.

Local leaders will celebrate this milestone and debut new charging stations for the district’s fleet of electric school buses on Tuesday at 10 a.m., at The Wilkes County Depot located at 901 Ashley Drive.

School officials said previously that all 25 daily routes exclusively served by electric and propane buses.

The school district, partnered with Yancey Bros. Co., Blue Bird and Highland Electric Fleets, the leading provider of school bus fleet electrification-as-a-service, procured the clean buses and installed five new Tellus charging stations to the district’s five electric school buses.

The charging stations can power electric school buses to run for 100-120 miles on a single charge.

Following the event, there will be a school bus ride and a tour of the electric chargers for attendees and media.
